Space sims/games
Permalink Closed

I think the only one I've ever really liked is Escape Velocity, and I liked the randomness and the freedom of it. I still play EV Nova from time to time. Other games might be prettier, but none of them are nearly as interesting or fun.

I never got into Kerbal. I appreciate it, but just putting things into orbit isn't that interesting for me.

I don't know why space sims are largely ruined for me - all I know is that growing up I never liked Star Wars or Star Trek. Yes, the characters and plots were derivative, but I think it ended up manifesting itself in the fact that I eventually realized that space isn't like those shows. It's far more interesting.

I enjoyed EV Nova as well, I also spent way too many hours in the Elite series...

My problem with Kerbal Space Program is that you feel kind of pressured to do things right, so you can't just have fun winging it.  That means setting up maneuver nodes, carefully time warping, executing the maneuver nodes, etc., and if you mess up, you gotta re-launch everything over again.  But maybe its just me.

That's actually one of the reasons Torchships looks like a lot of fun, is because (in the video from the Kickstarter) it didn't even show you your whole orbit, and you've got freaking kilometers/second to work with, so its like you don't feel like you have to do things exactly right. :3

Flying to the Mun by the seat of my pants (see Mun rise over horizon at periapsis, burn prograde for Jesus til your orbital paths intersect) and landing without crashing was a great experience for me in KSP, and even though I didn't have the delta-vee to get 'em home, it was very inspiring. I ran through Kerbals like toilet paper figuring things out and had a blast doing it. I think what I learned about orbital mechanics from Orbiter was what inspired me to get away from soft sci-fi and embrace the Hard Side.

Really?  I recently discovered KSP and my impression is that it is all about winging it.  The folks posting YouTube videos even keep referring to it as "the Kerbal way."  I've had a blast doing trial-and-error, and just landed a mission on the Mun.  I may get the Orion mod soon and flit about the outer system.

My 7-year-old daughter loves it.  We fly missions in the Katie Mark XII rocket (named avert the head designer).
